Film screening : Lagaan

15th august 2018
On the special occassion of Independence day we have watched the movie Lagaan(2001) directed by Ashutosh Gowariker.
On the Independence Day we had a movie screening of LAGAN at our Department of English. The main purpose to watching this movie was to critically evaluate the main key points and with the refraction of  Pre-Independence in the movie. In the movie there are many critical points like,
● Post colonialism
● Indianness
● Patriarchy
● Religion
● Nationalism
● Cricket as Metaphor
● Subaltern
● Rural India
● Feminism
● Teamwork and Leadership
● Goodness of Britishers
● Comparison of Lakha and Elizabeth
● Language
● Dance style
It is a sports-drama film, directed by Ashutosh Gowariker, produced by Aamir Khan and Mansoor Khan, written by Gowariker and Abbas Tyrewala. The film is set in the Victorian period of India's Colonial British Raj. Here I am interpreting film as per my understanding.
Plot of the movie :
The plot goes as there is no rain for a year in the village and the villagers are waiting for the rain and there isn't enough water to drink also. the farmers whose work is totally dependent upon rain thus they are helpless. BHUVAN is protagonist character of the movie. He is very caring for animal as well as for men. In his first scene we see that some British soldiers are about to shoot a dear and Bhuvan saves it from them but in the end he gets caught and taken to the Britishers.
Patriotism :
The main theme of the movie is patriotism. In the movie the Bhuvan who is protagonist of the movie has a such qualities like he shows the great courage in his rebellion against British . He wants the welfer of the village people and that's why he also encourages or motives them to rebell against British provience. The main reason behind their rebellon is that they have a strong inclination of their own land. The farmers have to pay yearly lagaan to the the king and than king have to pay to the British captain. When they were suffering from draught and was not able to pay their lagaan, at that time captaion Russell has doubled the text and also challged the people of village to beat them in cricket match and three years of tax will be removed or erased.People of village are very hard at their work because they want to defeat the Britishers in match. This shows their passion for their land.
Bhuvan see the problem as an opportunity. We can see in the movie that when the captain from British challenged Bhuvan for play a cricket match at that time Bhuvan accept this opportunity and he thinks that this is good for village.
Subaltern theory
As we all know that subultern means someone with a low ranking in a social, political or other hierarchy. It can also means someone who has been marginalised. In the movie,The character of Kachra is marginalized character who belongs to lower class and when Bhuvan elects Kachra as in the team of cricket at that time his other teammates deny to take him as team member because he is untouchable. The other marginalized character is Gauri. She wants to play cricket but his father denies her and says to do only household work.
