The postmaster by Rabindranath Tagore

The postmaster by Rabindranath Tagore :

"O Dada, pray don't give me anything don't in anyway trouble about me"

About Author :

The postmaster is one of the best short story written by Rabindranath Tagore. The postmaster is a very moving story of the love of a simple rustic girl for a city bred man. It is written by Rabindranath Tagore a greatest Indian literary artist of twentieth century. A versatile genius has found expression in poetry, novel, short stories, plays, music, painting and elections. Most of his works has originally written in Bengali and later translated into other language. Tagore is the frist and so far the only Indian to receive Nobel prize for literature in 1913 for the collection of poems Gitanjali.

About The postmaster :

The postmaster is a study of the psychology of solitude. It represents the solitude of two important characters Ratan and postmaster. Both are living and felling loneliness. In small village of Ulapur. An English man an owner of an indugo factory manages to establish post office. A postmaster has been appointed fof the post he belong to Calcutta. He is alone away from the family and ghostly streets of Calcutta. He feels lonely and get the company of Ratan, an orphan girl in the village. She is also alone, without family and friends.

So the story is primarily dealing with human relationship. Relationship of both is peculiar but fascinating relationship. It is also impossible to categorize. The relationship between rural illiterate girl and educated urban postmaster who has been posted at the village for time being. It is a mater slave relationship which soon converted in to the educational process. When postmaster falls sick, at that time the relation takes another turn with Ratan treating and caring for him.

At the end of the story, the postmaster get transformed to another place. He left Ulapur. Ratan feel bad. So the whole story revolved around the character of Ratan and postmaster.

Narrative technique of The postmaster :

The present story the postmaster is written with 'Omniscient' narrative technique. Tagore assume third person but doesn't shy away to bring out the inner self of Ratan's character. As a master of human psychology, he has depicted the psychological thinking process, state of hope of both the characters, Ratan and postmaster. The story continues to flow in such a way that reader get portion of the story. The story is very simple. The narration is also very simple. Author doesn't miss to site dialogue in between the story. The repetition of that dialogue left effective impression. For example,

             "Did you call me Dada?"

The following dialogue exposes the psychology of Ratan.

"No, no you need not to tell,
          Anything, anybody at all,
           About me; I don't want
          To stay here any longer."

This dialogue shows Ratan's pathetic situation and pathos. The narration is of course again a sentimental narration with full of pathos. We are sympathetic with Ratan with her condition, her consequences, and with her loneliness. Narrator makes the reader to not supposed to inform that what happens to Ratan and postmaster whether they met ever or not.

Online discussion Mario Vargas Llosa's Interview

Mario Vargas Llosa the Peruvian novelist, was awarded the nobal prize for literature in 2010. His most recent novel is The Neighbourhood. He was interviewed for the wordpost by Michael Skafidas, a journalist and professor of comparative literature at the city University of new York. So Here I am sharing the ideas which l like the most from his interview. 1. I like one line that "If you respect literature you must accept not only the very idealist, altruist vision of human beings but also the infernal vision of them" when you say that I love literature and I respect literature, at that time you may accept some work of literature which is ldealist. In our literature there are many novels and plays which are based on feminist approach. For example in the Interview, he give one example, Nabokov's "Lolita", 20th century novel. Readers attacked it because they claim the main character is a pedophile. "Pedophile" means someone who is sexually inter...
