Expert lecture on ELT - Prof. Dr. Atanu Bhattacharya

Hello readers,
This blog is a part of my thinking activity. We had Guest lecture by Professor Atanu Bhattacharya sir on 25, 26 and 27 January. It was an honor for us to attend Dr. Atanu Sir's talk session. On fisrt day, sir talked about briefly on English language teaching and teaching literature in the language classroom. On second day, sir talked about testing and evaluation and on last day, the possibility of research.

The history of English language :
First sir talked about history of English language teaching basically in India and some methods which we use. In language teaching, there is some principles and concepts. First we have to understand what happened with English teaching. Teaching is old phenomenon. English language teaching is important part of Indian culture civilization. We can divide English language teaching into six parts.
1. Classical language teaching
2. Middle ages
3. 12th-15th centuries
4. Renaissance
5. 17th, 18th and 19th century
6. 19th and early 20th

In classical language teaching, students were taught logic. Logic is a subject. There is one question that what do we teach in logic? UGC fisrt NET paper releted with this subject. Aristotle is a founder of syllogistic logic.
Example : All men are mortal
                   Socrates is a man
                   Therefor, Socrates is mortal.
This was an important of language teaching. So in classical age, in the west, language teaching is not seen as only teaching of language but also teaching of logic. When you use language, you need to use logical arguments. In those days everyone can not studied. For example, women were not allowed to studied. It was rich people who can get the education and these people are trained to become public speaker. So in public speaking, you need to use logical arguments with perfect language.
Grammar : we should teach grammar because we should Speke well. We should make mistakes while speaking something.
Rhetoric : rhetoric is figures of speech through this you can make your language more effective. How do you make your language more argumentative? That was teach in rhetoric subject.
Philosophy : philosophy is aslo an important part of language teaching. If you have language than you must understand how that language constructs reality. But the debate was does language create reality? Does reality exist? For example, if we are talking about Bhasmasura, than we can not see it but we listen. So here we can see how language create reality and we have to be careful because sometimes language create false reality.

Online discussion Mario Vargas Llosa's Interview

Mario Vargas Llosa the Peruvian novelist, was awarded the nobal prize for literature in 2010. His most recent novel is The Neighbourhood. He was interviewed for the wordpost by Michael Skafidas, a journalist and professor of comparative literature at the city University of new York. So Here I am sharing the ideas which l like the most from his interview. 1. I like one line that "If you respect literature you must accept not only the very idealist, altruist vision of human beings but also the infernal vision of them" when you say that I love literature and I respect literature, at that time you may accept some work of literature which is ldealist. In our literature there are many novels and plays which are based on feminist approach. For example in the Interview, he give one example, Nabokov's "Lolita", 20th century novel. Readers attacked it because they claim the main character is a pedophile. "Pedophile" means someone who is sexually inter...

Thinking activity : Waiting For Godot by Samuel Beckett

"Nothing happens, nobody comes, nobody goes, it's oweful." Hello readers, this Blog is part of thinking activity. We had a movie screening of the movie "Waiting For Godot" written by Samuel Beckett. The movie "Waiting for Godot" is directed by Michael Lindsay-Hogg. Our task is to observe the point which is given by sir and to think. Click here if you want to see the point. In this movie, Vladimir's role performed by Barry McGovern and Estragon's role performed by Johnny Murphy. Other two important characters are Pozzo -sadistic master and Lucky - submissive slave. So Pozzo's role performed by Alan Standford and Lucky's role performed by Stephan Brennan. 1. What connection do you see in the setting (“A country road, A tree Evening”) of the play and these paintings? In all play, first, we see the setting of the play or Author may first think about setting. So the setting of the play is inspired by two paintings by Cas...
